Sunday School Lesson 1-8-12
Passage: Genesis 41:37-45 and 50-52
Genesis 41:37
King James Version (KJV)
37And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.
v. 37 Pharaoh was pleased with the interpretation of his dreams. He knew Joseph was speaking the truth.
Genesis 41:38
King James Version (KJV)
38And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?
v. 38 Pharaoh recognized the power of God, even if he was
not a believer himself. Pharaoh knew he could not trust his own advisers, but
felt lead to trust Joseph, who was still a prisoner in jail.
Genesis 41:39

39And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:
v. 39 Pharaoh mentions Joseph's discreetness and wisdom. The
trait Joseph earned through his hardships in slavery and prison.
Genesis 41:40

40Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.
v. 40 Pharaoh granted Joseph much power in Egypt. This parallels many parts of Joseph's past: his favor with his father and favor with Potiphar, but the difference now is that Joseph is both wiser and a more seasoned believer.

41And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.
v.41 Pharaoh explains the full extent of Joseph's new
position and power.

42And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;
v. 42 Pharaoh demonstrated his trust by giving Joseph his
royal ring, royal robes and gold chain. These articles were valuable by
themselves but the true value came from the power and favor it denoted given to
Joseph.

43And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.
v.43 When Pharaoh presented himself to the public, Joseph
was his "right-hand man" riding in a chariot right behind Pharaoh's
and making sure the public and all royal officials knew to "bow" and
"make way" for this new leader.

44And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.
v. 44 The power Pharaoh gave Joseph included giving Joseph
reign over the workers of the land.

45And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnathpaaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.
v. 45 Pharaoh re-named Joseph and gave him a wife.

Background
Joseph, son of Jacob (not Joseph the
husband of the Virgin Mary), eventually forms one of the 12 tribes Joseph was a
dreamer, one dream was about sheaves and how his sheave is the tallest, and
another was about the son and the moon and eleven stars bowing to him. Joseph
being his father's favorite son, his brothers being jealous sold Joseph into slavery.
We find him here in slavery in Egypt serving an Egyptian master.

wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
8But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my
master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that
he hath to my hand;

kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I
do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
10And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that
he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
11And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into
the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there
within.
12And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and
he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
13And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his
garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
14That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto
them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in
unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:
15And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice
and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.
16And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came
home.
17And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The
Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:
18And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that
he left his garment with me, and fled out.
19And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his
wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to
me; that his wrath was kindled.
20And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a
place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
21But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave
him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
